Lecture XV: Gravitational energy and orbital decay by gravitational radiation
نویسنده
چکیده
The previous discussions have taken place in the context of linearized GR, which is not a fully consistent theory. We will now discuss some aspects of GR in the nonlinear regime, with particular attention to isolated systems. Our eventual goal is to compute the energy loss of a system emitting gravitational waves. We introduced the concepts in the last lecture, and are now ready to proceed to the calculation. The recommended reading for this lecture is: • MTW §20.4,20.5.

Study of Solar Magnetic and Gravitational Energies Through the Virial Theorem
Virial theorem is important for understanding stellar structures. It produces an interesting connection between magnetic and gravitational energies. Using the general form of the virial theorem including the magnetic field (toroidal magnetic field), we may explain the solar dynamo model in relation to variations of the magnetic and gravitational energies. We emphasize the role of the gravitatio...
متن کاملLes Houches Lectures on Effective Field Theories and Gravitational Radiation
These lectures give an overview of the uses of effective field theories in describing gravitational radiation sources for LIGO or LISA. The first lecture reviews some of the standard ideas of effective field theory (decoupling, matching, power counting) mostly in the context of a simple toy model. The second lecture sets up the problem of calculating gravitational wave emission from non-relativ...
متن کاملSpin effects in the inspiral of coalescing compact binaries.
We derive the contributions of spin-orbit and spin-spin coupling to the gravitational radiation from coalescing binary systems of spinning compact objects. We calculate spin effects in the symmetric, trace-free radiative multipoles that determine the gravitational waveform, and the rate of energy loss. Assuming a balance between energy radiated and orbital energy lost, we determine the spin eff...
متن کاملSearching for Gravitational Radiation from Binary Black Hole Machos in the Galactic Halo
The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) is one of a new generation of detectors of gravitational radiation. The existence of gravitational radiation was first predicted by Einstein in 1916, however gravity waves have not yet been directly observed. One source of gravitation radiation is binary inspiral. Two compact bodies orbiting each other, such as a pair of black holes...
متن کاملGravitational Radiation from Keplerian Binary with Oscillating Orbital Plane
The gravitational radiation from two point masses in Keplerian circular or elliptic orbit is calculated with the assumption that the orbital plane of the binary undergoes small oscillation about the equilibrium x-y plane. This problem is simplification of a physically possible orbit where one of the point masses is spinning whereby the spin-orbit force drives the orbital plane to wobble in a co...
